Group Therapy

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where a small group of individuals, usually 6 to 8 people, meet regularly with one or more trained therapists. These groups offer a safe and confidential space for participants to discuss their feelings, experiences, and challenges. The group setting encourages open communication, empathy, and understanding among members.

Groups foster a sense of connection and community that can be powerful catalysts for gaining personal insight, growth, and healing.

What are some of the benefits of joining a group?

Connectedness: Sharing your experiences with others who can relate provides a powerful opportunity for connection. You can find comfort in knowing that you are not alone in your struggles. This is a unique aspect of groups that fosters a sense of belonging and community and can decrease loneliness.

Enhanced Self-AwarenessGroup therapy is a space to gain a deeper understanding of yourself. Members are encouraged to give and receive feedback to other members in group. These interactions can help you to understand how you are perceived by others and often result in profound realizations and self-discoveries. It can also increase your capacity and tolerance for giving feedback and working through interpersonal conflicts.

Diverse PerspectivesEach group member brings unique life experiences and viewpoints to the group. This diversity enriches the group dynamic and offers a range of insights that you might not have considered on your own.

CommunityGroup members often develop strong bonds and find the group to be a source of meaningful support. Knowing you will have time dedicated weekly to process with your group can be grounding and containing, especially during challenging times.

Cost-EffectiveGroup therapy typically costs less per session than individual therapy. It can be a great option for those who do not have the budget for individual therapy right now, or for those who want to dip their toe into therapy before beginning individual therapy.

Which is better-- group therapy or individual therapy?

This is a tricky question to answer. It depends on what you are looking for. Both are powerful and transformational modes of therapy that have their own advantages and disadvantages. Often the two treatments are combined to enhance the therapeutic effect.
